Ionity hits milestone of 600 charging locations in 24 European countries

According to Ionity, there are a total of 3,382 HPC charging points at the 600 Ionity locations that have been put into operation. A further 96 charging parks are currently under construction. Ionity is now present in a total of 24 European countries. By 2025, the number of Ionity locations is expected to increase to more than 1,000 with 7,000 charging points.

The company was founded in 2017, when Ionity was launched as a joint venture between BMW, Ford, Mercedes and the VW Group (represented by Audi and Porsche). Hyundai and BlackRock’s Climate Infrastructure Platform are now also among the shareholders as financial investors. In the initial phase, Ionity set up 400 locations with mostly four to six charging points. At the end of 2021, the company announced a second expansion phase with a different focus. Since then, Ionity charging parks have not only been set up on motorways but also near major cities and along busy trunk roads. What’s more, new locations are planned with an average of six to twelve charging stations right from the start. Each charging station will still be able to deliver 350 kW. Power sharing is not practised at Ionity.

Similar to EnBW with its covered fast-charging hubs, Ionity is also increasingly buying its own plots of land. On its website, the company is actively looking for sites of at least 500 to 3,000 square metres in size, with larger areas also being considered. The sites should “offer space for at least 12 charging bays and hardware” and be easily accessible from motorways or main roads. Locations with access to existing services (such as petrol stations, cafés, shops, and toilets) are also preferred.
